My name is Gord Miller. I have been a active singer and musician
since 1967. Growing up in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, I found my self
drawn to music at a very early age - CHUM AM was a huge influence on
my early years, and when I saw my first live rock band in 1965 at the
Lindsay Fair's CKLY Bandstand (some local group playing "Kicks" by
Paul Revere and the Raiders) I was absolutely hooked. I stood frozen
on the spot and tried to figure out how those guys made that sound -
what instrument was playing what? - how did they do that?????
I set out on my musical journey later the same month - I bought a
reasonably groovy Harmony Rocket Guitar and enrolled in guitar lessons
at Rawson Music in Downtown Lindsay with Cyril Rawson. At school I
sought out other kids who were obviously bitten by the rock and roll
bug... we talked endlessly about our plans to rule the music world...
I started playing with Glenn Charlesworth, a friend who was also
taking guitar lessons, and we built a stage in his attic complete with
green and red plastic stage curtains - here we imagined we were
playing on the world's biggest stages to thousands of adoring fans...
As I entered grade 7, I met Peter Stainton through Mike McCarty - both
drummers. Peter and I formed a 2 man band and occasionally Mike & Jim
Patterson would join us. Peter and I had more names for our band (it
changed daily) than we knew songs, but that only made it more fun...
I became obsessed with guitars and rock and roll in general and sought
out anyone who would listen.
Some other early years collaborators included guys like Hugh Butler,
Jerry Shier, Larry Woolacott, Bill Graham, Mark Lemon, Roy O'Neil,
Blaine Putnam, Wayne Armstrong, Peter Huron... we were all trying to
master out instruments and learn from each other.
Throughout my entire career in music, I have written and recorded
music under the pseudonym "Mongoose". As this site is primarily
dedicated to the documentation of my performing bands I will not go
into detail here - see the website
http://www.passportband.com/mongoose/
Over the years, some of my influences have changed, but most still
remain...
These include The Beatles, John Lennon, The Band, Neil Young, Ian
Thomas, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Ron
Sexsmith, Paul Revere & the Raiders, The Smithereens, Elvis Costello.
XTC, Steely Dan, Dire Straits, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Bob
Dylan, Hank Snow, Klaatu, Hank Williams, John Mellencamp, Blue Rodeo,
Jim Bryson, Chuck Berry, Kathleen Edwards, The Jayhawks, The Kinks,
The Who, and the Cat Band from the Friendly Giant have all been major
influences throughout my journey...
Take a look at the pages that link from the navigation bar to the
upper left - i hope some of the fun i have had over the years
translates to those who look in.
thanks
