In 1992, Jim
Templeton (Jim had
done some recording
with Gord in the mid
80's), called Gord
Miller after Gord
moved to Winnipeg
for the second time
(Gord had lived in
Winnipeg during the
80's as well) to ask if
he was interested in
singing & playing
keyboards in a new
band he was trying to
form with some other
Winnipeg friends.
Gord decided to give
it a shot and
"Passport" was born!
Mike Przednowek
(guitar, vocals), Jim
Templeton (bass,
vocals) and Fred
Marych (drums,
vocals) completed the
original Passport
lineup in 1992.
Vaughn Smith
became the band's
drummer when Fred
moved to Minneapolis
in June 1993.
Vaughn, one of
Winnipeg's best
drummers was unique
in his sense of
humour and exacting
rhythm. In September
of 1995 Mike left the
band and Terry
Tosky was hired to
take his place.
Terry's special talent
lay in his ability to
recreate absolutely
accurate renditions of
1960's guitar sounds.
In May 1997, Terry
left and was replaced
by Larry Laker, a
long-time Winnipeg
musician who brought
a distinctive vocal
style and synth-guitar
sounds to the band.
When Jim and
Vaughn moved on to
pursue other interests
in December 1997,
Kerry Hannah and
Greg Kirton joined
up on bass and
drums respectively.
Kerry, a veteran of
many successful
Winnipeg bands and
a producer in his own
right. Greg, also a
veteran brought a
strong drumming style
to the band.
In April 1998, Brian
LeClair became a
permanent member of
Passport - Brian's
consummate
saxophone skills
added a very special
touch. Brian's rhythm
guitar stance was
also legendary. In
January 1999, Larry
went on to other
things and Gord,
Kerry, Brian and Greg
continued on as a
four-piece, and
sometimes a three-
piece minus Brian.
In November 1999
Gord moved to
Whitby and started a
second Passport
Band in his home
province of Ontario.
Gord carried on as
Lead Vocalist, Lead
Guitar & Keyboards;
new member Phil
Ferguson brought
his genuine British
Invasion drumming
style to the group
(Phil grew up in
Liverpool), and old
Mongoolian pal Eric
Pulst contributed a
powerful and tasty
Bass Guitar
foundation to
Passport.
In May 2001, Blaine
McKenzie--a long-
time rocker from
Toronto--joined
Passport as
piano/guitar and
vocalist. Blaine's
easygoing nature and
natural understanding
of what rock and roll
is really all about fits
Passport's attitude
and tradition well.
Blaine stayed with the
band until February
2002 and continued
to sit in with the band
on occasion.
Throughout 2002,
Phil Ferguson, Terry
Beauclerc, Peter
Somers & Mike
McCarty each sat on
the drum throne with
the band.
October 2005 -
Passport releases it's
third CD
"Misunderstood" - a
terrific collection of
more of it's favorite
covers.
April 2005 - Eric Pulst
leaves Passport after
5 years with the band.
Eric's 5 year stint
rivals Jim Templeton's
time with the band as
bass player from
1992 - 1998.
May 2005 - Passport
plays the Grand Hotel
in Lindsay (where the
Ontario chapter of the
band had it's first gig
in 2000), for a benefit
concert for dear
departed friend Frank
Sabovitch. With old
friend John Steele
joining the band on
Bass and Vocals, the
night was a huge
success.
August 2005—John
Woodhouse joins
the band full time on
bass and vocals, and
Tony Callahan is
added as second
Guitarist and Vocalist.
July 1, 2006 - Phil
Ferguson plays his
last gig as a
permanent member of
Passport at Ontario
Place to an
appreciative crowd.
Phil's length of time
with the band is
second only to
Gord's, and his
contributions and
great attitude will
surely be missed, but
he will be returning
from time to time as
"phil-in" drummer!
(Excuse the pun!).
July 2006 - Roger
Humphries becomes
a member of Passport
bringing with him a
lifetime of experience
in music, including his
youth in Montreal
playing with members
of what later became
April Wine. Roger
had sat in with the
band several times
over the years .
March 2008 - Brian
Lobo joins Passport
for several gigs as
Keyboardist and
vocalist
extrarordinare.
May 2008 - Dave
Drage joins the band
on rhythm guitar,
mandolin, harmonica
and vocal.
After more than 600
gigs since 1992,
Passport is still
rocking...
